Stora Mossen

Complete reorganization and renovation of a neighborhood park and playground in the Bromma district, Stockholm.

The project’s conceptual idea ‘moss in the bog’ (a play on words in Swedish, ‘mossan på mossen’) references the site’s pre-urbanization history as a peat bog. The hydrology and reproductive cycle of sphagnum moss inspired a play area integrated with the existing natural environment. A winding path negotiates the steep slope and connects different play elements, curving around an open lawn. Stormwater follows the topography, flowing into a narrow strip filled with willow scrub. Play elements such as wooden play sculptures and a large playhouse are informed by the flora and fauna of peat bogs. The park also includes different types of seating, picnic tables, and swings.

Despite the challenging context, most of the park has universal access and the playground equipment is inclusive, supporting play for all ages and abilities.
