Härneviskolan

A new playground for a rebuilt elementary school encourages movement and imaginative play.

The existing building was demolished and a modern replacement built to serve double the number of children. Drawing inspiration from the school’s namesake (ancient goddess Härnevi), the concept ‘crossroads’ references documented trade and pilgrimage routes around a cult site in the area. Archeological finds such as round jewelry, rune stones, a maze and stone bowls take the form of circular play areas, while the paths curving between them suggest travel routes. Gentle slopes replaced grade changes with stairs, allowing for a more accessible space. Environmental aspects were prioritized; preserving mature trees, adding biodiversity, reusing the majority of existing play equipment and using natural materials. The sustainable design balances space for dynamic activities with quieter games and outdoor education.
