Henriksdalshöjdens Preschool

Design and construction of a playful outdoor environment for a rebuilt preschool in an affordable housing complex.

The site was originally a Viking stronghold, referenced by the architects in their 1968 housing design. To accommodate double the number of children as the previous school, we conceived of the conceptual idea ‘modulerade möten’ (modulating encounters). This play on words speaks to the original fort and inspired the idea of an interactive wall, to extend the amount of play space. Allusions to archeological excavations are evident in raised and sunken areas of different materials and functions. The concept is repeated throughout the design, with multi-use curbs integrated into sandplay and swing areas. Developed with the artist bureau SIMKA, a series of large concrete ring with interior materials repeating those of the playground, create an imaginative wall that acts both as a partition and a place to play or rest.
