Akalla

Redevelopment of a Stockholm city district built during the million homes program with a large proportion of affordable housing.

Initiated by the public housing authority Svenska Bostäder, the project began with a public dialogue to engage current residents and asses their needs. A collaborative team worked together to plan traffic and pedestrian flows, opportunities for infill, stormwater management, and green spaces. The resulting masterplan is a policy document for long term development of the area. The design guidelines emphasize the importance of revitalizing the public realm and suggest new forms for parks, squares, and recreation areas.
